Transportation of goods by rail is carried out by various types of rolling stock. Depending on the nature of the cargo, body structure, methods of loading and unloading, as well as ensuring the safety of goods, they are distinguished: covered wagons, open wagons, platforms, tanks, dump wagons, bunker-type wagons and ref-wagons.

The main technical characteristics of a freight car are: container (own weight of an empty car), carrying capacity (the largest mass of cargo that can be transported in it), body volume, area, length and other linear dimensions. The most common types and sizes of wagons are shown below:

Covered freight car – used for the transportation of goods that require protection from atmospheric precipitation. The car body is a structure consisting of a frame with a floor, 4 walls and a roof. Loading and unloading in universal covered wagons is carried out through doors located in the side walls.

Gondola car – designed for the carriage of goods that do not require protection from atmospheric precipitation. Since gondola cars do not have a roof, this allows fully mechanized loading. For the transportation of bulk cargo, there are open-top wagons with hatches in the floor, which allow mechanizing the unloading of such cargo.

Hopper (bunker) – a type of gondola car used for mass transportation of fertilizers, cement, grain and other bulk cargo.
